Winter-Ready From Day One: Site Planning for Prefab and Modular Homes in Snow Country

Prefab and modular homes have changed how quickly a house can go from factory floor to finished foundation. Panels, modules, and steel or mass-timber frames can be set in days rather than months. But while the building itself arrives engineered and ready, the site it sits on still has to handle everything the climate throws at it — and in snow country, that means a winter plan. Too often, winter is treated as a construction-season problem rather than a living-in-the-house problem. The result is driveways that drift shut, walkways that turn to ice, and meltwater that freezes against the foundation. Planning for snow and ice during site design costs very little; fixing these issues later can be expensive and frustrating.
